James Allan Antique Sheffield Teapot with Repoussé Fruit Design

This antique teapot by James Allan of Sheffield is such a special piece. Made in the Victorian Era, it features a beautifully fluted body with ornate repoussé fruit detailing—look closely and you’ll spot pineapples, pears, grapes, and other lush fruit woven into the design. Repoussé is a metalworking technique where the design is pushed out from the reverse side to create raised, sculptural details—and the craftsmanship here is just gorgeous.

It sits on four feet, each formed like twisting grape vines with detailed little leaves. Even the lid is a work of art, topped with a delicate flower bud finial.

James Allan was a silversmith working in Sheffield during the late 1800s and early 1900s—right in the heart of England’s silverplate industry. While he may not be as widely known as some of the larger firms, his work is prized for its high-quality plating and thoughtful, often intricate design. Pieces like this show the kind of care and artistry that made Sheffield silver famous.
